Centenary City Fraud: EFCC Arrests Pius Anyim

Anyim Pius Anyim, a former senator and the Secretary to the government of the Federation under President Goodluck Jonathan administration has been arrested by the the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with the allegation of fraud over the Centenary city project in Abuja.

The former SGF was arrested on Thursday and is currently in detention where he is being interrogated by officials of the anti-graft commission.

The House of Representatives had recently recommended the prosecution of Anyim over his shady involvement in the $18 billion Centenary city project. The House had indicted Anyim and his associates of flouting existing laws guiding the Abuja land swap policy for personal gains.

Centenary City is a planned city to be located in Abuja. It is an ambitious project to build a smart city along the same lines as Dubai, Monaco and Singapore. The city is to be built from scratch on a 1,260 hectares piece of virgin land located several kilometres southeast of the Federal Capital Territory.

The concept of the city was mooted as project to mark the 100 year anniversary of Nigeria by the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. It is to be private-sector driven
