Lagos Commissioned 8.8MW Mainland IPP

LAGOS State government yesterday commissioned the 8.8MW Mainland Independent Power Plant (IPP) in Ikeja, Lagos expected to guarantee uninterrupted power supply to the Old Secretariat complex, Lagos High Court, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital ( LASUTH), water works, recently commissioned Energy Academy and public lighting.

Commissioning the project, state governor, Babatunde Fashola ( SAN) said it was a demonstration of his government’s commitment and promise, of which a good government is only duty-bound to fulfill.

Fashola said Lagos has again demonstrated that within the limit of which the law allows, the state could deliver power to the people. “So, should the National Assembly say all states should take charge of the power, Lagos is ready and will deliver.”

The governor added “We have heard all manner of promises from the Federal Government, as if power is a new invention. It is already a century old. We don’t have to import gas from overseas. Nigeria is the only country I know that has oil and gas and still has no electricity. It is a lesson for all of us that we don’t need four years to make it happen,” he said.

Fashola said the electorate must choose wisely in the next general election and vote for capable candidate that could deliver, adding that “electricity, good roads, education and so on know no race, tribe or religion, but good people with sound mind.”

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Taofiq Tijani said the plant is a testimony of what happens when government and the organised private sector work together.

The plant was made possible through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative between the State government and a consortium of Mainland Power Limited, CET Power and Solad Electricity Limited.
