Real Madrid Edges Gremio To Rule The World

Real Madrid made it a second consecutive title at the Club World Cup with a one-nil defeat of Brazilian champion Gremio in Abu Dhabi, making it the fifth title of the year for the Los Blancos.

With the victory, Real is the World, Europe and Spain champion. The season is also the most trophy-laden season in the club history. Before now, the highest number of trophies Real has won in a season is four. The Zinedine Zidane tutored boy upped the ante by winning five in a year.

Sergio Ramos, a three-time winner of the competition, like his club, the skipper wore a broad smile in recognition of the fact that he had just achieved something unique, for never before in the club’s illustrious 115-year history has one of its captains hoisted five out of a possible six trophies aloft.

“We were aware of the record,” acknowledged Ramos. “It made us even more motivated for today’s match.”

  • Madrid is the first side to retain the Club World Cup.
  • With three wins, Los Blancos are now level with Barcelona as the most successful side in the competition’s history.
  • Twice a scorer at UAE 2017, Cristiano is now the all-time leading marksman in the competition with seven goals.
  • Since taking over as coach two years ago, Zinedine Zidane has collected eight titles, putting him level with Luis Molowny on the club’s honours board. Only Miguel Munoz with 14 has won more for Los Blancos.
