The  National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has revealed that 149 of the 220 corps members shortlisted for this year’s NYSC President’s honours award, would jostle for the award. It stated that 71 corps members were disqualified because they asked for concessional deployments.

Speaking while inaugurating the 18-man national selection committee in Abuja yesterday, the Director, Corps Welfare and Inspectorate, Mr. Mike Ahile, who represented the Director General of the scheme, Brig-Gen Johnson Olawuni, charged members of the committee to make transparency their watchword.

In his keynote address to the committee, the NYSC Director General told members to adhere strictly to the criteria and other procedural templates as a guide towards unbiased selection of corps members on merit. “It is a great honour for NYSC to host highly placed men and women of value in society, who have abandoned their busy schedule in order to assist in carrying out this tedious responsibility of selecting ex-corps members for national honours.”

“As you are already aware, the philosophy behind composition of a national selection team from reputable organisations with men of credible standing is to ensure objectivity, equity, fairness and openness in the final process. “As a neutral umpire with iconic pedigree, the national selection committee has discharged its duties with utmost sense of responsibilities, objectivity and equity to the commendation of the highest authority of the land,” he said.
