Senate In Another 1999 Constitution Amendment Merry-Go Round

0

The Nigeria Senate on Tuesday set up a 38-member committee to commence another around of amendment of the 1999 constitution. The constitution amendment process has become a play thing of the senate in recent time, with every senate since the advent of the democratic governance going the merry-go round without any tangible outcome.

Announcing the constitution of the committee at plenary in Abuja, Senate President Bukola Saraki said the committee would be headed by Ike Ekweremadu, deputy president of the senate. He said the committee would gather facts from stakeholders across the country as part of the process, urging its members to concentrate on issues that would de-emphasize recurrent expenditure.

“With the composition of the committee, the senate has set the stage for the activities leading to the delivery of better governance to our people,” he said. “The work already carried out by the seventh senate has made the job of the new committee easier.”

He said the eighth senate would make amendment to the constitution a priority.
