Akinwunmi Ambode, the governor of Lagos gathered philanthropists and business moguls including president of Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE , Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, chairman, Zenith Bank Plc, Mr. Jim Ovia, and chairman, Famfa Oil, Mr. Modupe Alakija among other prominent Nigerians that converged on Lagos to establish Mobile Cancer Centres, (MCC) for the state.
Speaking at the special event to mark his 53rd birthday celebration organised by the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP) held at the Lagos House, Ikeja, the governor said the fund raising to procure the MCCs was the first step towards winning the fight against cancer.
Ambode noted that the facilities would be deployed to the three senatorial districts to fight cancer in Lagos State. The governor said, “This will help us save millions of Nigerians from the cancer scourge. Without this donation, the war against cancer cannot be achieved. And the opportunity to save life will be lost.
“It is not a celebration but a call to act because against all odds especially the economic downturn, you all are still ready to stand-up and give back to the society. There is more value to ourselves and humanity than we ever imagine.”
According to him, those still in the corporate world who want to support the course could come on board, saying the door is still open. Ambode noted that this forms one of the reasons the committee came together to do something on his birthday.
Other prominent Nigerians at the event includes; Dr. Christopher Kolade, Publisher, Guardian Newspapers, Maiden Alex Ibru, Dr. Michael Omolayole, Chief Adebutu Kessington, Chairman of Eleganza Group, Chief Rasaq Okoya, Rtd Justice Adesola Oguntade, Mr. Gbenga Oyebode, captains of industries, members of Diplomatic Corps, among others.
