In an apparently terror attack and a reminisce of the incident in Nice, France, a truck has mowed to death 12 people and injuring dozens in a packed Christmas market in Berlin, Germany.
The lorry, which was loaded with steel beams, came to a halt on a pavement on one side of the market. It had just rammed a large stand called “Fascination Christmas,” tearing off one side and knocking down a large Christmas tree.
Police said the vehicle, which had Polish number plates and belonged to Polish delivery company ARIEL Żurawski, made it as far as 80 metres into the Christmas market before it came to a halt.
The man who alleged to have drove the truck has been identified by local media as a 23-year-old Pakstani refugee. “Naved B”, who had been living in Flughfen Tempelhof, an old airport that had been converted into a refugee centre, was detained last night following the attack. According to German radio station RBB-Inforadio, the 23-year-old was registered in Germany on 31 December 2015 in Passau, in Bavaria. He has been released by German authorities when there was no concrete evidence linking him to the attack.
This will surely impact negatively on Chancellor Angela Markel re-election bid and enervate the far-right politic movement in Germany and indeed the whole of Europe.
