The French-American alliance, one of the oldest in the world which was strained in the dawn of the Donald Trump’s presidency and his withdrawal from the Paris Climate Pact is on the path of being rekindled with the visit of the US President to France for the annual Bastille Day celebrations and the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I.
President Trump and his wife arrived in Paris,the French capital yesterday for 36-hour visit to meet with Macron to discuss a number of issues including; seeking potential solutions to the crisis in Syria, broader counterterrorism strategies and probably reach a compromise on the thorny issue of climate change and the Paris Climate Agreement.
President Trump, standing alongside President Emmanuel Macron of France at a news conference yesterday, said the two nations have “occasional disagreements” but that would not disrupt a friendship that dates back to the American Revolution.
President Macron, acknowledged sharp differences on the Paris climate pact but said the two leaders could find other areas of cooperation. “Should that have an impact on the discussions we’re having on all other topics? No, absolutely not,” he said.
The Bastille Day, formally called la Fête nationale is the French National Day commemorates the first anniversary of Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, a turning point of the French Revolution, as well as the Fête de la Fédération which celebrated the unity of the French people on 14 July 1790. Celebrations are held throughout France. The oldest and largest regular military parade in Europe is held on the morning of 14 July, on the Champs-Élysées in Paris in front of the President of the Republic, along with other French officials and foreign guests. The special guest this year is the US President, Donald Trump and the First Lady, Melania Trump.
The US President will return to Washington later today.
