It’s dawn of a new era in Zimbabwe as the military staged a bloodless coup ousting it’s long time President, Robert Mugabe.
Grace Mugabe, the wife of Zimbabwe’s president who has been engaged with power struggle with Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa. The Vice President was later fired by Mugabe to pave way for his wife’s path to the presidency. Grace was to have fled to reportedly neighbouring Namibia. Her husband Robert Mugabe is thought to be under house arrest in the southern African country’s capital, Harare. It is unclear how Ms Mugabe was able to make her escape.
The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation was this morning playing patriotic anthems from the time of the war against white rule, the struggle – “Chimurenga” – from which Robert Mugabe, originally guerrilla leader, emerged to become leader of his nation. The music was interrupted from time to time to broadcast a statement saying that the military was in charge and President Mugabe was safe.
“President Robert Mugabe is under house arrest after the military seized control of Zimbabwe”, South African president Jacob Zuma has said.
The world leaders has been calling on the parties involved in the Zimbabwe to avoid bloody escalation. Schools and embassies in the country are closed.
Mugabe,93, is the oldest president in the world. He took over power in 1980.
