Messi has continued to shatter the record books as the Argentine goal machine was won the European Golden Shoe for a record fifth time with his 34 goals in La Liga this season, helping his club to a 25th league triumph. Messi also netted his sixth Pichichi Trophy as the La Liga top scorer, two more than Ronaldo.
He has previously won the award in 2010 with 34 goals, 2012 with 50goals, 2013 with 46 goals and 2017 with 37 goals. His impressive tally in the just concluded season came from 32 starts.
In second place is Liverpool’s Egyptian sensation, Mohamed Salah, who netted 32 goals in a stunning debut season for Liverpool, while Tottenham striker Harry Kane rounded out the top three after plundering 30 goals for his side in the Premier League.
Four-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo finished ninth in the rankings after scoring 26 goals for Real Madrid in La Liga. Serie A duo Ciro Immobile (Lazio) and Mauro Icardi (Inter) finished on 29 strikes, along with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.
Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani finished seventh with 28 goals in Ligue 1.
