Still basking in the euphoria of its global success, Afrobeats achieve another milestone when the genre was accorded a category of its own at the upcoming VMA Awards 2023. For the record, it will be the first time that Afrobeats artistes, exclusively, are vying for the same award at the international level.
This year, the newly created Best Afrobeats Song category will be keenly contested by Ayra Starr‘s ‘Rush,’ Burna Boy‘s ‘It’s Plenty,’ Davido‘s ‘Unavailable’ featuring Musa Keys, Fireboy DML‘s ‘Bandana’ featuring Asake, Libianca‘s ‘People,’ Rema & Selena Gomez‘s ‘Calm Down,’ and Wizkid‘s ‘2 Sugar’ featuring Ayra Starr.
Overall, Rema leads the Afrobeats pack with three nominations from his global hit song ‘Calm Down’, earning nominations for Collaboration of the Year and Song of the Year. He will be competing alongside other heavyweights such as Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flower’, Sam Smith & Kim Petras‘ ‘Unholy’, and Olivia Rodrigo‘s ‘Vampire’.
The best Afrobeats category was added to the VMAs this year. Following Latin (2006) and K-pop (2019), this is the third genre-specific category that the VMAs have added in this century. The five more genre-specific VMA categories for rock (1989), alternative (1991), R&B (1993), pop (1999), and hip-hop (both 1999) were all first added in the previous century.
The 2023 VMAs will be broadcast live from Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Centre on Tuesday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. No host has yet been revealed. The previous year’s show, which took place in the same location, was hosted by Jack Harlow, LL Cool J, and Nicki Minaj.
Fans may vote for their favourites across 15 gender-neutral categories starting on Tuesday (August 8) by visiting vote.mtv.com through Friday, September 1. The best new artist poll will be open during the live performance. At a later time, the nominees for social categories like group of the year and song of the summer will be revealed.
