Burna Boy grabs his first premier UK chart crown – and a piece of history – with his latest album ‘I Told Them’.
The Nigerian-born musician, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, soars to the top of the most 
recent Official U.K. Albums Chart, which was released on September 1. She does this to become the first international Afrobeats artist to win the title.
Burna Boy’s eighth and most recent album, which is currently in the lead, surpasses his previous No. 1 album, ‘Love, Damini’ from 2022, which peaked at No. 2
“Burna Boy has transformed into a global superstar and this No. 1 album reflects his growth over the last few years,” comments Austin Daboh, vice president of Atlantic Records U.K. in a statement. “The success of this album is the combination of world class music, a coherent strategy based in culture, and unmatched passion, energy and commitment from his wider team and Atlantic Records.”
This is definitely not Burna’s first brush with musical success. With his 2019 single “Own It,” which he co-wrote with Stormzy and Ed Sheeran, Burna Boy reached the top of the U.K. singles chart. The stats keep falling. He performed his ‘Love, Damini’ tour date at a sold-out 60,000-seat London Stadium earlier this summer, becoming the first African musician to headline a stadium event in the United Kingdom. He also won a Grammy Award for 2020’s Twice as Tall (best global music album).
“I’m absolutely thrilled and humbled by the incredible support and love that ‘I Told Them…’ has received from fans in the UK,” Burna Boy told CNN in a statement provided by his publicist.
“This album is very close to my heart, and to see it reach the number one spot is a testament to the power of music and the unbreakable connection I have with my fans,” he added. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”
Burna Boy, 32, has had a spectacular summer. He headlined 
a sold-out stadium concert in London Stadium in June, making history as the first African musician to do so, and he repeated the feat in a US stadium, Citi Field in New York, in July. At the 2023 BET Awards, he won Best International Act for the third time.
On September 23, the performer will take his live performance to Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium in South Africa.
