Yesterday in Brisbane, Australia, top-seeded Roger Federer defeated No. 3 seed Milos Raonic to pick up his 83rd ATP title. But this wasn’t just another win and another title. It was the 1,000th match win of Federer’s career.

That puts him in elite company with Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl for the most singles match wins in the Open era (since 1968).
It’s another milestone for Federer, who has won an Open era-record 17 Grand Slam titles and has spent a record 302 weeks as the ATP No. 1 player.

• 279: More than a quarter of Federer’s wins have come in Grand Slam events, propelling him to those record 17 titles. He is the only player with multiple streaks of winning an individual Grand Slam at least five times in a row.

Sunday’s opponent, Raonic, has lost to Federer eight times in their nine meetings, but he is not the most-victimized player by any means. Along the way, Federer had seven win streaks of at least 20 matches, the most in the Open era, and picked up Olympic gold (with partner Stan Wawrinka in doubles in the 2008 Beijing Olympics). He has also given Switzerland its first Davis Cup in 2014.
Federer’s tournament win continues a bounce back after a down 2013 season in which he won just one title. Last year, he won five titles and reached the semifinals in three of four Grand Slams. He hasn’t won a Grand Slam title since 2012 Wimbledon.
