The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Perry Calderwood, has launched a media campaign against child early and forced marriages in developing countries including Nigeria.
According to him, over 15 million children globally are forced into early marriage each year, leading to an unbroken circle of illiteracy and poverty.
Mr Calderwood solicited for the support of the public to end the trend ahead of a global photo exhibition entitled “Too Young To Wed”. There have been cases of child marriage in Nigeria and some other developing countries, most of which were consummated as a result of culture, religious belief and the quest for survival in places where poverty rate is high.
