Floyd Mayweather’s showdown with Manny Pacquiao will attract a record amount of revenue from sponsorship, which is expected to add another $13.2million (£8.72m) to the mega-fight.
The $300m bout at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 2 is set to shatter all revenue records and money from sponsorship is no different.
Top Rank president Todd duBoef told ESPN.com that the five title sponsors for the event will chip in a total of $13.2m, roughly three times the previous highest amount. Although exact records for sponsorship have not been kept, some Mayweather bouts from years gone by have attracted around $4m.
According to the report by ESPN, Tecate have paid $5.6m (£3.7m) to become the official beer of the fight and the main ring mat sponsor, beating the $5.2m (£3.44) bid from Corona. Tecate brand director Gustavo Guerra said, ‘We have been sponsoring boxing since 2007 so we have been associating ourselves with boxing and been waiting for so many years for a fight like this.
‘We know in the past we have had great fights but nothing is going to be compared to what is already called the fight of the century. We wanted to increase our brand awareness and we will achieve it with this fight. ‘It is like the Super Bowl of boxing, a gigantic sporting event. It’s good for us. It’s about credibility. We cannot have the luxury of being out of this fight. This is very important for us.’
