Kaduna State government yesterday said explosions believed to be the handiwork of Boko Haram terrorists occurred in Zaria killing at least 30 adults and a toddler.
Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i was accompanied to the scene by Police Commissioner Umar Shehu.
Governor’s spokesman Samuel Aruwan issued a statement saying “terrorists detonated explosives in Zaria that killed and injured several persons at the secretariat of the local government council. The casualty count is 32 fatalities, including a two-year old child. Forty-seven injured persons are being treated at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria and other hospitals in the city.
“The Kaduna State Government has expressed its sadness at this mindless attack on our citizens. It has condoled with the victims and is coordinating the treatment of the survivors.” Governor El-Rufa’i urged the people to be vigilant and promptly report all suspicious persons and activities to the security agencies and community leaders.
Meanwhile, the government has banned street hawking and begging to enhance public security. It also said that the law banning commercial motorcycles in the state remains in force, and the law will be strictly enforced. Militant Islamist group Boko Haram, which often targets northern Nigeria, has stepped up attacks since President Muhammudu Buhari took office in May.
