The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced the harmonization of its biometric data with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive.
Making the revelation at a press briefing at the headquarters of the FRSC in Abuja, the corps marshal and chief executive of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi, said the harmonization of the data with the NIMC will ensure a central database for the country, where information can easily be traced.
While speaking on the ongoing operations against the menace of road traffic crashes, especially those involving tankers and trailers, code-named “Operation Scorpion,” the FRSC boss noted that the special operation was launched in Lagos about three weeks ago, considering the fact that the state has the highest number of trailers and tankers.
He stated that the operation has been replicated in other states of the country with the same high volume of trailers within the three weeks of sustained operation, adding that a total of 1,402 offenders have been apprehended with 1, 981 offences booked across the country.
In the same vein, he said a total of 1,293 vehicles were impounded while the vehicle papers of 138 of the offenders were confiscated. He also revealed that in the course of the operations, special mobile court sessions were organised at the various operational areas to handle summary trials of the offenders.
He stated that a total of 826 offenders were arraigned before the courts, out of whom 753 were convicted with options of fines, adding that three offenders with serious cases of dangerous driving, driver’s licence violation and assaulting marshals on duty were sentenced to prison terms without option of fines, while 70 of the offenders were discharged and acquitted.
