The road to extinction for Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS seems to be paved with gold as iOS and Android strengthens grip on the global market.
The latest analysis from Gartner found that Microsoft’s troubled mobile software made up just 0.3 per cent of all smartphone sold across the world in the last three months of last year.
Although only two main players stole most of the market, the figures show that really there was only one winner.
In the months covering October-December 2016, Android took 81.7 per cent of sales, equivalent to 352.6 million devices, helped by big-named launches such as the Google Pixel and Pixel XL.
iOS was in second place with 17.9 per cent, with the 77 million devices sold in the quarter – largely thanks to the release of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last September.
Overall, Gartner estimated that smartphone sales totalled nearly 1.5 billion units throughout the entire of 2016, a five per cent increase from the previous year.
