American actress and United Nations goodwill ambassador, Angelina Jolie has been appointed as a visiting professor of London School of Economics’ Centre for Women, Peace and Security.
The 40-year-old actress will join as one of the four visiting university professors as announced on Tuesday, May 23. Jolie will be joined by the former British foreign secretary, William Hague, and they are assigned to teach parts of a new master’s program that tackles on women, peace and security. The class will start in the fall, the 2016-17 academic year. It is said that the course is the one of its kind in the world.
Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt’s wife, has previously worked with Hague when they established the 2012 Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative, as reported in New York Times.
The actress said in a statement that she is very encouraged by the establishing of the master’s program. She hopes that other academic institutes will follow the step, as it is vital to broaden the discussion on women’s right and end the impunity for crimes that affect women such as sexual violence.
The politician Hague and UN’s special envoy Jolie will be joined by Madeleine Ress, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom’s secretary general, and Jane Connors, the director of International Advocacy at Amnesty International Geneva.
In essence, Angelina Jolie has previously visited refugee camps where she found herself speechless. She also waded on the global migrant crisis saying that she was very disheartened by the United States’ response and she feared that international countries would implement isolation policies.
The Hollywood actress is looking forward to teach and learn from the students as well as to share her own experiences of working with the governments and the United Nations.
