The All Progressives Congress (APC) is cementing its ruling party status in the country with comprehensive victories in more than half of the states in Nigeria in the governorship elections. According to results announced so far, the APC is on course to win about 22 states.
The ruling party now to become opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), however, won in Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Gombe and Enugu. While it lost the governorship seat in Lagos, the PDP won six seats in the Lagos State House of Assembly for the first time ever.
Senator Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State broke the re-election jinx like he vowed last year. Since 1983, no governor has ever been re-elected in the state.He defeated Rashid Ladoja of Accord Party, Former Governor Alao Akala of Lbour Party and Senator Teslim Folarin of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The APC won the governorship elections in Kaduna, Sokoto, Niger, Borno, Adamawa, Lagos, Kwara, Katsina, Bauchi, Kano, Yobe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Oyo, Ogun, Benue, Nasarawa, Jigawa and Benue States.
The APC candidate is leading in Imo state. Governor Rochas was said to have been leading in 20 LGAs out of 27 LGAs, In the result announced by the state’s returning officer, Professor Ibidapo Obe, Governor Okorocha polled a total of 385,071, while his closest rival and PDP’s Emeka Ihedioha scored 306,142. The election was declared inconclusive because there were some perceived irregularities in results in some LGAs.
Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Plateau State, Simon Lalong, has emerged winner of the governorship election in the state. Lalong scored 537,050 to beat the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the election, Senator Gyang Pwajok, who polled 501,938.
In Taraba state, there was clear indication that the APC might have produced the first female governor in Nigeria in the person of Senator Jummai Aisha Alhassan.
