Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, held a brief meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rt Reverend Justin Welby, who paid him a goodwill visit as he recovers from an ear operation in London.
President Buhari travelled to London, Last week, for a 10-break break to have an infection on a nagging ear problem treated and to recuperate from the operation.
Unconfirmed reports has it that President Buhari is seriously ill with Meniere Disease that has hampered his hearing in his left ear and he is also said to suffer from a cough.
It has been reported that the president’s health is deteriorating and he may need to extend his stay further but presidency officials have dismissed these claims. To prove that Presidency Buhari is hale and hearty, the presidency posted pictures of him receiving Reverend Welby at Abuja House, the official residence of the Nigerian high commissioner to the UK.
Also present at the meeting was the secretary general of Anglican Communion Worldwide, Reverend Josiah Idowu Fearon,. At the meeting the archbishop handed President Buhari a framed picture of a cartoon showing him fighting corruption.
It will be recalled that, during the last anti-corruption summit in the UK, The Archbishop’s words stood in sharp contrast to Cameron’s own comments to the Queen, when he described Nigeria as “one of the most corrupt countries in the world”, along with Afghanistan.
Welby, who was with him at the time, immediately corrected him, pointing out that Buhari is “not corrupt”.
His thoughts on the country, “Nigeria is a country which has more promise, more opportunity, more potential than anywhere else that I know in many continents, not just in Africa. Its people are so intelligent, so full of energy, so full of commitment, that when Nigerians work together, the world – not just Africa – is affected by that beneficially. And so we pray for the potential and future of this land, to be a place that has a profound effect for good on our world, and demonstrates what is possible to be achieved.”
