Countdown For Forceful Eviction Of President Jammeh Begins

0

The countdown for the forceful eviction of President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia has begun. Nigerian and other West African countries are preparing a joint force to intervene militarily in Gambia if President Yahya Jammeh does not hand over power on January 19, a Nigerian military source said on Tuesday according to Reuters.

“A decision has been taken that he will not remain president of Gambia at the expiration of his tenure,” the source said, referring to Jammeh.

Jammeh lost a Dec. 1 vote to president-elect Adama Barrow who is due to be sworn in on Thursday. Jammeh conceded defeat but now says he will not step down.

Meanwhile, with his forceful eviction inevitable, three ministers in his government resigned on Monday. They are Foreign Minister Neneh Macdouall-Gaye, Finance Minister Abdou Kolley and Trade Minister Abdou Jobe.

This follows last week’s resignation of Communication Minister Sheriff Bojang, who fled the country, and Sports Minister Alieu Jammeh.

All the resigned ministers were immediately replaced by Yahya Jammeh.
