Judge Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja has granted the embattled leader of the of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu bail on health grounds with some stringent conditions.
The judge granted bail to Kanu in the sum of N100m with three sureties in like sum. She ordered that one of the sureties to be provided by the defendant must be a highly placed person such as a senator.
The second must be a highly recognized leader in the religion being practiced by the defendant and he third surety to be a resident of Abuja and who must have a landed property in the Federal Capital Territory.
In addition to these, Judge Nyako also prohibited the IPOB leader from being interviewed and gathering with a crowd of more than ten persons. Should Mr. Kanu violate these conditions, he will be re-arrested.
Judge Nyako refused to grant bail to the three other Biafran activists standing trial alongside Mr. Kanu. The three co-defendants are Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.
Present in the court today to show solidarity to IPOB’s agitation are the Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode.
There was jubilation outside the court by Biafran supporters when the news of the bail filtered out. The court fixed July 11 and 12 for commencement of trial.
