Novak Djokovic completes his Grand Slam set and becomes the first man since 1969 to simultaneously hold all four major titles after winning his first title at Roland-Garros.
The wait is finally over for Novak Djokovic. In his fourth Roland-Garros final, the Serbian triumphed at last to become the eighth man in history to complete the career Grand Slam. Novak joins the exclusive list which include; Englishman Fred Perry, American Don Budge and Australians Rod Laver and Roy Emerson achieved the feat, with Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to do it in the Open era.
Djokovic fought back from a set down to beat Andy Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 6-4 over three hours and five minutes. As a result, the 29-year-old also becomes the third man ever to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time, joining American Don Budge and Australian Rod Laver in a quite remarkable feat.
Djokovic said: “In the last point I don’t even remember what happened. It was really one of those moments where you just try to be there.
“It’s like my spirit has left my body and I was just observing my body, fight the last three, four exchanges, going left to right and hoping that Andy will make a mistake, which has happened. [It was] a thrilling moment. One of the most beautiful I have had in my career.”
In the women’s, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza beat world number one Serena Williams in straight sets to win her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open.
Fourth seed Muguruza won 7-5 6-4 to make amends for losing last year’s Wimbledon final against Williams. The 22-year-old is Spain’s first female champion at Roland Garros since Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in 1998.
Williams, 34, had hoped to win a 22nd Grand Slam singles title and tie Steffi Graf’s Open-era record. The French pair of Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic won the women’s double defeating the Russian duo of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 6-3 2-6 6-4 to claim their first Grand Slam title while Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez beat Bob and Mike Bryan 6-4 6-7 6-3 to win the men’s doubles title at the French Open.
The 15th seeds had never before won a Grand Slam tournament, whereas the Bryan twins were seeking their 17th Major title together. Lopez and Lopez – who are not related – are the 11th different men’s pairing to triumph in the last 11 Grand Slams.
