A former governor of Cross River State in the South-South geopolitical region of Nigeria, Mr. Donald Duke, has recently decried the erasure of history teaching from the curriculum of Nigerian schools.
Duke, who during his time as governor of the state was lauded for the various economic and developmental initiatives that was implemented, urged school administrators to restore the teaching of History in order to promote Nigerian values and culture.
The former governor spoke on Wednesday in Lagos at the launch of Ethan & Harriet Pals Initiative.
He called on schools that have removed history from their curriculum to bring it back.
According to Duke:
“Nigerians are not interested in their culture.
“The country is made up of two different sets of human beings, the elites and the local traditional people. The elites are those who travel round the world. They know more about other people’s cultures and traditions but do not know about the culture and tradition of their own country.”
“The local people, on the other hand, are those who though are based in the country, do not know anything about the culture aside their immediate vicinities. This situation is getting worse since History was expunged from our schools curriculum. Our education is going nowhere. We should be happy that we are born into a country where there are so many problems because that gives us so many opportunities.”
