Is it face-off or show of shame? The on-going feud between Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and the First Lady, Hajia Aisha Buhari over the accusation that the latter was somewhat involved in the Haliburton Bribery Scandal.
Governor Fayose Governor Ayodele Fayose had in statement issued on Monday alleged that the Aisha Buhari named in the scandal was President Buhari’s wife. “The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted over the Halliburton Scandal.”
“When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialize the judgment for people to see and read,” Fayose had said in his statement.
The First Lady rather than diligently clear her name angrily and perhaps justifiably went to Twitter to join issues with Fayose.
This is symptomatic of the ignominy of people in power in Nigeria. Governor Fayose has been rascally and making a lot of unguarded and foolish statements. He is known to be making baseless accusations. He cries to high heaven about a wolf coming to attack when there is none. Dignifying him with such a response by the First Lady is totally unexpected and shameful to say the least.
The First Lady has exhibited decorum and maturity compared with the First Ladies we’ve had in recent time. Throwing shades with Fayose or whoever insult or accused her rightly or wrongly is not the path of honour and above all, “unFirst Ladylike”
The Peoples Democratic Party unfortunately is in disarray at the moment, the party should as a matter of urgency call Fayose to order. These unwarranted and unguarded statements must stop. He should realize he is a governor and a statesman. The country and his state are facing myriad difficult issues to heat up the polity unnecessarily. Nigerians want people who can proffer solutions to the debilitating problems facing our nation not compound it.
It is a welcome development that the offensive tweets have been deleted. The First Lady should go beyond that by contacting the US authorities on the Haliburton case and prove to Nigerians that indeed the Aisha involved in the Haliburton Bribery Scandal is not her. That’s the kind of response expected by Nigerians not throwing shades like kindergarten children.
