The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is to spend N6 billion on recruitment next year, according to its chief executive, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi.

The Corps Marshall, who spoke while receiving the Senate Committee on Federal Character in Abuja, disclosed that the agency’s budget for the next fiscal year was N31 billion.

Oyeyemi said N953.7 million would be for overheads, while capital projects and personnel cost are to take N2.34 billion and N29.9 billion.

He said that the proposed recruitment was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari but stated that the exercise would only proceed when funds were available.Reviewing the 2016 budget, Oyeyemi said of N686,679,781 appropriated, N460,574,117 representing 67.07 per cent, was released for overheads.

On capital projects, the corps marshall noted that of the voted N2.34 billion, only N912.9 million got to the agency, putting performance at 38.9 per cent.

He added that N1.46 billion was generated and remitted to the Consolidated Revenue Fund Account (CRF) as at September 30. Faulting the corps for failing to give details of revenue generated from issuance of vehicle plate numbers, the committee’s vice chairman, Suleiman Hunkuyi (APC, Kaduna North), said such an amount could have boosted its revenue.

Duro Faseyi (PDP, Ekiti), who described the total budget performance of the agency as “nonsense”, said: “Let us tell ourselves the truth. I have nothing encouraging to say about this. How can one commend the agency when releases are less than 40 per cent. This will be the first time we are seeing this. It is nonsense. I have nothing else to say.”
