Robin Thicke and Pharrell will have to prove to a jury that they did not copy elements of late singer Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” when creating their 2012 blockbuster hit “Blurred Lines.”
On Thursday, a federal judge ruled that a jury should decide the claim made by Gaye’s children that “Blurred Lines” contained multiple elements from their father’s song, including signature phrases, bass lines, hooks, chords and vocal melodies
U.S. District Judge John A. Kronstadt ruled in favor of the Gaye family after reviewing analyses from experts hired by both sides. He also determined that there is a genuine dispute to be dedicded and denied Thicken and Pharrell’s requests to have the plagiarism accusations rejected by the court.
This court battle has lasted more than a year now, and the new trial has been scheduled for Feb. 10 in Los Angeles.
