The 89th Academy Awards will surely have an indelible place in history especially for African-Americans And Muslims around the world. It was a night a Muslim won for the first time and a record 5 African-American winners.
Mahershala Ali won for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Moonlight”, the movie that won the biggest award of the night as the Best Picture. “Moonlight,” about a young gay African American man coming of age in a rough Miami neighborhood. With his win, Ali made Oscar history on Sunday, becoming the first Muslim actor to win an Academy Award.
Ezra Edelman, the director of “O.J.: Made in America,” won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Viola Davis, took home the trophy for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Fences,” based on an August Wilson play.
“Moonlight” writers Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, a historic win that made them the fifth African-American honoree of the night, setting an all-time record.
The most politically poignant moments were conveyed in absences. Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who won for best foreign language film for “The Salesman,” chose not to attend the Oscars in protest of Trump’s recent immigration ban; he sent an impassioned statement for tolerance and empathy instead.
The Best Short Documentary Subject was won by “The White Helmets,” about Syrian first responders, its cinematographer, Viola Davis, wasn’t there, because he was prevented from entering the United States due to visa issues.
Though “La La Land” was nominated for a record-tying 14 awards lost biggest award of the night, the best picture to Moonlight, the film still take home a respectable six Oscars on the night including Best Director for Damien Chazelle and Best Actress for Emma Stone. Casey Affleck won the Best Actor award for his role in “Manchester by the Sea”.
Several other best-picture nominees managed to win at least one or two Oscars, including “Fences,” “Manchester by the Sea,” “Arrival” and “Hacksaw Ridge.”
The 89th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
