Do you want to live long, probably up to 100 and stay youthful? Then you better upped the eating of chocolate and bacon in your diet. Ruth Benjamin of Marshall, Illinois, recently turned 109 attributed her longevity to bacon. Another woman you just turned 101, says chocolate is proverbial fountain of youthfulness and longevity.
In an interview with WGN, the lucky lady said she eats “potatoes some way, every day,” and also loves bacon and sauerkraut. She’s not alone in her appreciation for breakfast, either. Supercentenarian Susannah Mushatt Jones, once the world’s oldest person at 116 years-old, also swore by bacon. The Brooklyn resident ate four strips every morning, along with grits and eggs. Clearly these ladies are onto something.
Benjamin’s doctor thinks a few more factors are at play. “Hard work. A loving family. A wonderful marriage,” Dr. Jim Turner of Cork Medical Center told WGN. “She never drank, she never smoked, but she was happy. And I think that was the key to her longevity.” As for the bacon? Turner says he wouldn’t tell Benjamin to change a thing. “Absolutely nothing,” he insisted. “We don’t need to do anything.”
You heard the doctor! Now if you want to cover all of your bases, it might be worth whipping up some chocolate-covered bacon.
