Gentleman’s Quarterly magazine aka GQ, recently named Kanye West as its Most Stylish Man of the Year after Kanye won a reader-submitted poll, beating out another favourite Idris Elba (who’s reportedly a James Bond contender) in the finals.
“From bomber jackets to Chelsea boots to over-sized coats,” writes GQ’s Jake Woolf, “Kanye helped define what this year meant to men in terms of the things they wear, and we think his place as champion in this tournament was earned.”
For years West has always been arguably the most fashion-focused man in hip-hop, with broad interests that go well beyond the hottest new brands of hoodies or sneakers (though he is also very much into those as well, designing his own line of sneakers, first for Nike, then for Adidas). This fall he finished off his community service (for an altercation with the paparazzi) by teaching a fashion class at the Los Angeles Trade Technical College, and also has his own design firm, Donda (named for his mother), which recently put out the pretty incredible-looking covers for Nicki Minaj’s newly-released album The Pinkprint and Tyga’s upcoming The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty. Oh, and there was that story that made the gossip rounds about a month ago that Kanye was on the verge of quitting the music business altogether in order to focus exclusively on fashion.
