The name Majek Fashek (Majekodumi Fasheke) will always rekindle memories of raw talent, energetic performance and a once glowing light of Nigeria’s music export. Ever since he released the “Prisoner of Conscience” album in 1988, expectations were high and he responded by producing more quality music that was of international standards.

Such was the extent of Majek’s talent that the family of legendary reggae singer Bob Marley approached and endorsed him to continue to the unfinished work of the late legend. Majek was the first known Nigerian singer to be listed on the Jamaican music chart with “Send Down The Rain”. Majek worked with various artists worldwide including Tracy Chapman, Jimmy CliffMichael JacksonSnoop Dogg, and Beyoncé. Then, for Majek the future was bright, opportunities were rolling in both at home and internationally, but Majek could not overcome his greatest predicament, alcohol and substance addiction. Only those that witness the birth of this great talent of his in 1988, when he released his first solo album, will be able to capture the enormity of his wasted talent.

On 15th of October, at the celebration of another legend – Fela Anikulapo’s birthday, which is part of the ongoing “Felabration” 2015, Majek gave music lovers a glimpse of his old self with a surprise performance. Having recently left rehab after his much publicised struggles with addcition, he was almost his old self on stage and reminded us of why he is still considered as one of Africa’s greats, as he performed some of his hit songs, including the one that earned him the ‘Rainmaker’ title.

He was later joined on stage by Yeni and Femi Kuti, who brought the power of his saxophone to the performance.
