A man in India was mauled to death when he tried to take a selfie with a wounded bear. The incident happened on Wednesday.

Prabhu Bhatara was returning from a wedding in an SUV when he stopped to relieve himself near a forest. That’s where he spotted the injured bear and tried to snap a photo with it, the Hindustan Times reported.

The vehicle’s passengers tried to dissuade him from approaching the bear, but he didn’t listen. Bystanders captured video of the incident, showing the bear attack Bhatara as onlookers screamed. A stray dog even approaches and tries to tear Bhatara from the bear’s grip, but the animal holds on as the pair wrestles on a hillside.

At one point a whistle is blown, which does nothing to release the bear’s grip on the man.

“Bhatara died on the spot,” forest ranger Dhanurjaya Mohapatra said, the Hindustan Times reported.

Rangers tranquilized the bear and recovered the body late Wednesday, according to the Hindustan Times. The forest department said the bear was being treated for injuries. Forest officials promised to compensate the victim’s family, according to the report.

The incident marks the third death involving people taking selfies with animals in the eastern Indian state of Odisha over the past year.

Two people were killed when they tried to take selfies with wild elephants last year.
