Meet the Black Business Owner Using AI to Treat Kidney Disease Patients

0

Introducing Dr. Ikenna Okezie, the visionary behind Somatus, a Black-owned healthcare organisation revolutionising the treatment of renal illness with its headquarters located in Northern Virginia. His company uses artificial intelligence (AI) to support early detection, prevention, and patient empowerment over their health.

Okezie founded Somatus in 2016 with the goal of revolutionising the treatment of renal illness. At Somatus, we prioritise early detection of renal problems and patient empowerment over dialysis, rather than waiting until it’s too late and depending only on this treatment option.

They use analytics and machine learning to track patients’ health using RenalIQ, a unique AI-powered platform. Without requiring them to leave their homes, it identifies those who may be at risk and provides them with virtual care options.

Additionally, they collaborate closely with neighbourhood physicians and health plans to guarantee that patients receive individualised at-home treatment. They provided services to more than 150,000 people in 2022 and received an incredible $325 million in funding. As a result, they became one of the $2.5 billion healthcare firms with the quickest rate of growth.

“Since our inception, Somatus has always been committed to bringing superior evidence-based integrated care to patients with kidney disease, which delays disease progression, improves quality of life, and lowers total cost of care,” Okezie said, according to Shoppe Black.

In order to improve patient care with regional teams and cutting-edge technologies, Somatus extended its collaboration with the Kidney Care Centre to many states in 2023. By taking the Health Evolution Pledge, they have demonstrated their commitment to reducing health inequities as well.

Sun Life U.S. selected Somatus as a preferred partner in 2024 to enhance treatment for members with heart and renal problems, utilising AI to save expenses and improve results.

Somatus is a new chapter in healthcare, providing hope to millions of people suffering from kidney disease through strong partnerships and innovative technologies.
