NCS Confirms IGP Appointment And INEC National Commissioners

President Muhammadu Buhari presided over the National  Council of State meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.  Yesterday’s meeting was the second National Council of State meeting under the Buhari’s administration.

Those in attendance included; Goodluck Jonathan, Abdulsalami Abubakar and Ernest Shonekan while Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Shehu Shagari and Yakubu Gowon are conspicuously absent.

Also absent are the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara.

The state governors at the meeting included Rivers, Borno, Niger, Imo, Cross River, Taraba, Yobe, Benue, Bauchi, Enugu, Kwara, Adamawa. Others are Abia, Sokoto, Kaduna, Lagos, Kogi, Plateau, Jigawa, Kebbi and Katsina. Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) at the meeting included Lawal Uwais, Mariam Muktar, Idris Kutigi and Alfa Belgore.

The NCS unanimously confirm the appointment of Mr Ibrahim Idris as the Inspector General of Police according to Governor of Jigawa State, Mr Abubakar Badaru, who briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting.

The Council also appointed six national commissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to bring the number of commissioners for the electoral body to 12.

They include Mohammed Haruna (north-central), Air Vice Marshal Ahmed Tijani Muazu (rtd) from northeast, Abubakar Nauche (northwest), Professor Okechukwu Ibeanu (southeast), May Agbamuche Mbu (south-south) and Dr. Adekunle Ladipo Ademola (southwest).

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, briefing journalists said that the six appointees were drawn from the six-geopolitical zones of the country.

The Council further approved five new commissioners for the National Population Commission (NPC). They are Dr. Eyitayo Oyetunji from Oyo State, Mr Patricia Inyanya from Benue State, Mr Benedict Ikpong from Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Haliru Bala from Kebbi State and Gloria Izonfo from Bayelsa State.
