The President of the United Nations Security Council, Professor Joy Ugwu has presented a programme of work for the month to the council which has since been endorsed by the other 14 members. Uwgu spokesperson Dr Tope Adeleye Elias-Fatile said the diplomat briefed the entire member states of the United Nations on the programme of work.
He said Nigeria will pay attention to three thematic debates which are ‘Peace and Security in Africa – Focus on Ebola’ (Thursday August 13), meant to highlight the role of regional and sub-regional organisations in fighting the epidemic. The Director-General of the World Health Organisation is expected to attend the meeting.
He said by next Tuesday a meeting on ‘Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Regional Organisations and Contemporary challenges of global security’ would be held to underline the fact that regional organisations have roles to play in the maintenance of international peace and security.
It will look at their role as first ‘responders’ to the challenge of international peace and security because they understand their environments better and they understand the dynamics involved in any conflict in their regions, he said.
“Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Security Sector Reform” will take the day on Thursday 20, as a follow-up to the main focus of Nigeria’s presidency of the council in April, 2014 when for the first time in the history of the Council, a ‘stand-alone’ resolution was adopted on Security Sector Reform.
