The feud in the Peoples Democratic Party might soon be coming to an end as the two factional Chairmen of the party-Ali Modu Sheriff and Ahmed Makarfi, met in Abuja yesterday and resolved to end the prolonged leadership crisis bedeviling the party.
Reading a joint statement issued by Sheriff and Makarfi, in Abuja, the deputy national chairman of the party (Sheriff’s faction), Dr Cairo Ojougboh, said that the meeting between the two leaders resolved to set up a joint committee to reconcile aggrieved segments of the party in the country and Diaspora.
The statement said that relevant organs of the party would be consulted to resolve the crisis and pursue the vision of the PDP founding fathers. It said that the two leaders urged stakeholders to remain calm and refrain from any actions and utterances that could further divide the party.
The statement read in part: “At a meeting held this morning (yesterday), between the two of us (Sheriff and Makarfi), a holistic review of the state of affairs of our great party, the PDP, was deliberated upon.
“The meeting was held in a most convivial atmosphere of brotherhood and understanding in the best interest of our great country, Nigeria and the sustenance of our multi-party democracy.
“In reviewing the crisis that has engulfed our party the PDP since the loss of the 2015 general elections, after 16 years of uninterrupted leadership at the centre, it became obvious to both of us as principal actors that it is time to heal the wounds and bring sanity to our democratic process, bringing relief to the teeming supporters of our great party, the PDP and to the benefit of our country, Nigeria.”
Secretary of the Makarfi-led faction, Senator Ben Obi, who represented his faction, said that the two leaders met yesterday to fashion out the way forward for the party. “Yes, the two leaders met and resolved that it is time to end the crisis that has engulfed the PDP,” he said.
“That is why they issued a joint statement. So the PDP is back as one family. We are here to convey to you what the two great leaders have said.”
