Serena Williams won her twentieth Grand Slam championship, on Saturday, when she emerged from the three-set finals against Lucie Safarova as the winner.
A true champion in her sport, Serena Williams has many endorsement deals and is even number 55 on Forbes’ list of highest-paid athletes. She earned an estimated $22 million in 2014, $11 million of which comes from endorsements. And that was before Audemars Piguet even entered the picture, naming her an official ambassador in December 2014.
Williams played the tournament, and indeed the final, wearing the Audemars Piguet Ladies Royal Oak Quartz with a diamond bezel. While this is not exactly a sports watch, it was certainly noticeable against the red clay of Roland Garros.
Stanislas Wawrinka took home his second Grand Slam championship a day later after winning the 2014 Australian Open by beating world number one Novak Djokovic in the finals. Wawrinka, too, is an Audemars Piguet ambassador and has played the entire tournament wearing his Royal Oak.
It’s odd enough as it is that both the men’s and the women’s champions are official ambassadors for one watch brand, but even more peculiar (in a good way) is that both champions wore their luxury Swiss timepieces on court while playing their tournament matches.
