Reading has signed experienced Nigerian international forward Yakubu Aiyegbeni on a deal which runs until the end of the season.
The 32-year-old was a free agent after leaving Qatari side Al Rayya and has now agreed a short term deal with the Royals.
Yakubu has previously played for Portsmouth, Everton, Middlesbrough, Leicester and Blackburn. Yakubu is the second-highest African and highest Nigerian goalscorer in Premier League history, with a total of 95 goals to Didier Drogba’s 101
Reading boss Steve Clarke said, “An experienced goalscorer, Yakubu brings a fantastic scoring record to this club and his addition will complement the strikers we’ve already got and help us to improve as a team in the latter stages of the season. “I know all about him as a player and I have heard very good reports about him as a personality in the dressing room. “He is a no-risk signing for us and I look forward to him scoring goals for Reading Football Club.”
In his last season in England with then-Premier League side Blackburn he scored 18 goals in 33 appearances. Over a 12-year international career, Yakubu made 57 appearances for Nigeria and featured in the squad for the 2002 and 2010 World Cups.
Reading currently sit 16th in the Championship table, with Saturday’s win against Sheffield Wednesday their first in four matches.
