The Vice President was later fired by Mugabe to pave way for his wife’s path to the presidency. Grace was to have fled to reportedly neighbouring Namibia. Her husband Robert Mugabe is thought to be under house arrest in the southern African country’s capital, Harare. It is unclear how Ms Mugabe was able to make her escape.

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation was this morning playing patriotic anthems from the time of the war against white rule, the struggle – “Chimurenga” – from which Robert Mugabe, originally guerrilla leader, emerged to become leader of his nation.
