760 Candidates To Jostle For 29 Governorship Positions

Today, Nigerians in 29 states will cast their vote in gubernatorial election just as the 36 states will also elect legislators. In all, 760 candidates are vying for governorship while 5,290 candidates are contesting for positions in the state houses of assembly.

Ahead of today’s elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has taken measures to address the challenges of late arrival of materials and men at some polling units across the country and the seeming lack of proficiency in the use of the Smart Card Reader (SCR) by some ad-hoc staff, which characterized the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

In the area of logistics, INEC has firmed its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). It also retrained its ad-hoc staff who would administer the Smart Card Reader. It further said that Robust Technical Support Teams of the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) department would be deployed to trouble shoot and fix Smart Card Readers where they fail to work.

In Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ondo,  Osun, Ekiti and Kogi, no governorship elections will hold in these states as the tenure of the present governors has not expired.
