Gumel Emerges NOC President

President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Engineer Habu Gumel has emerged president of Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC). He defeated the incumbent, Sani Ndanusa to reclaim the seat he lost four years ago.

Gumel, who is a member of the International Olympics Committee (IOC), polled 19 of the 36 available votes in a tightly contested race with Ndanusa polling 17. The office of NOC secretary general was also on the wire with incumbent Tunde Popoola edging out former scribe Banji Oladapo 17 to 16 votes.

Similarly, Bappa Misau with 18 votes upstaged Prof. Tunde Makanjuola, who pulled 17 votes to the position of treasurer, while Jonny Hamakin, a brigadier general returned to his position as deputy secretary general, defeating two contestants while Tony Ubani claimed his public relation slot, beating Mrs Nwankwo with 31 to 5 votes margin.

In his acceptance speech, Gumel promised a new NOC that will serve the interest of athletes and Nigeria sports. He stressed the need for all stakeholders to work together to take Olympics to greater heights. He assured that as IOC member, he would put his international contact at the disposal of all sports by attracting scholarship for athletes and training program
