Victory has so many fathers and mothers but defeat is always an orphan. In fact, defeat has no associate or friend. As history is made in Nigeria with the first defeat of a sitting President and government, we must give kudos and recognition to the singular individual that changed the history of Nigeria forever- President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

No amount of eulogy or accolade will be too much to heap on the man that transformed democracy in Nigeria. President Jonathan conceded defeat even before the official announcement of the presidential election result; this is unprecedented in the anal of history of Nigeria. The President congratulated the president-elected dousing tension in the land. Though, this is not the first time an opposition party will win an election in Africa but this is the first time a sitting president will graciously accept defeat and extend an olive branch to the winner. Who is saying Nigeria is not the giant of Africa?

While many might think General Muhammadu Buhari and All Progressive Congress is the winner, President Goodluck Jonathan is even a bigger winner with his deeds and conducts during the elections and announcement of results. He is our biggest statesman and number one democrat. It takes a mature and good natured person to do what he did. He is unlike our typical egoistical, power drunk and inconsiderate politicians. His comportment and demeanours in power and now in defeat should be a reference point to all.

As we celebrate and jubilate the concretization of democracy in Nigeria, we should never forget the man that helps to define and institutionalize the politics of graciousness in victory and magnanimity in defeat. The time for us to start working for the advancement of Nigeria is now.
