Nigeria Imports Meningitis Vaccines From UK And India

The Federal Government on Wednesday, announced that N2.8 million doses of vaccines will soon be delivered by the United Kingdom and India to help curb the outbreak of meningitis in some states. The disease has killed about 400 Nigerians cutting across several states.

Executive Secretary of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Faisal Shuaibu, told the House of Representatives Committee on Health Care Services in Abuja, that the vaccines were expected from the United Kingdom and India.

Shuaibu, who was represented by the Director of Community Health Services at NPHCDA, Dr. Emmanuel Odu, however did not give the exact date the vaccines would arrive in Nigeria. He however explained that the first batch of 823,000 doses would be supplied by the UK, while the second batch of 2 million doses would come in from India.

“We are expecting 823,000 doses from the UK any moment from now and that will be delivered to the affected states.

“We have made contacts with the company that manufactures the Type C vaccines in India for 2m doses to be delivered to us,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Senate called on the Health Ministry and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), to make that vaccinations for meningitis free in all public healthcare institutions in the country.
