Tragedy struck a Nigerian household in Maryland USA when two twins of 2 years age and their grandparents were killed in a fire in Prince George’s County overnight, local fire officials reported.

The victims were identified as Anna and Israel Omijie, 2, and 55-year-old Caroline and 63-year-old Samson Omogbo.

The four were pulled out of a burning home in the 6700 block of Knollbrook Drive in Chillum, near Hyattsville, just after 2 a.m. Tuesday, Fire Department spokesman Mark Brady said.

The grandparents were pronounced dead at the scene; the twins were taken in critical condition to a hospital where they died, officals said.

It was reported that about seven people were inside the home when the fire began, three were able to escape. The twins’ mother reportedly jumped from a second-floor window and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; the other two people were uninjured.

The cause is undetermined, but investigators believe the fire started in the first floor of the home.

Officials believed that firefighters “have not found any evidence” of a smoke alarm in the home, and they planned to return to go door-to-door offering to check neighbors’ alarms.
