Rema, Burna Boy Tops 2023 Headies Awards: Full Winners List

0

Three prizes were given to Rema and Burna Boy at the 2023 Headies. The event, which honoured Pan-African and Afrobeats musicians, took place on Sunday, September 3, at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

Rema took home awards for best male artist, best digital artist, and best African artist. In addition, Director K, who directed the music video for the “Calm Down” remix, received best music video, while Selena Gomez, who collaborated with Rema on the international hit “Calm Down,” won international artiste of the year.

Burna Boy won the Afrobeats song and single of the year awards for “Last Last” as well as the best R&B single award for “For My Hand,” which he co-wrote with Ed Sheeran.

Odumodublvck, Asake, Victony, and Tempoe are three performers who each received two awards.

The awards were open to applicants from January 2022 through March 2023.

Terrence J. is a host and actor. The show was hosted by Nigerian actress Osas Ighodaro and broadcast live on HipTV (Africa) Network and YouTube (US).

For the title of rookie of the year, Bayanni, Khaid, Guchi, Bloody Civilian, Odumodublvck, and Eltee Skhillz contested. Odumodublvck, the victor, will not only earn honour but also a two-bedroom, solar-powered house that is fully furnished.

It was already revealed that Sean “Love” Combs would receive the international artiste recognition award. Although he wasn’t at the event, the organisers promise to give his plaque.

The Hip Hop World Magazine of Nigeria created the Headies Awards, formerly known as the Hip Hop World Awards, in 2006 to honour great accomplishments in the Nigerian music business.

The Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre hosted the performance for the second time this year. From 2006 through 2021, it was hosted yearly in Lagos, Nigeria, with the exception of 2017 and 2020, when there was no ceremony.

Three significant all-genre music award ceremonies have added Afrobeats or African music categories in the last year. The first significant music awards ceremony to include such a category was the American Music Awards. On the programme that aired on November 20, 2022, they added their favourite Afrobeats artists. Wizkid won the first competition, defeating Tems, CKay, Fireboy DML, and Burna Boy.

The best Afrobeats category was added to the MTV Video Music Awards this year. Rema & Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down,” which is up for two other awards—best song and best collaboration—is the front-runner.

Best African music performance is a new category that the Grammys created this year (for the awards that will be given out on February 4, 2024). On Nov. 10, the Grammy nominees will be made public.
