UK Election: Conservatives Stumbled As Labour Gained Momentum, May Goes Into Alliance DUP To Form Government

0

British Prime Minister, Theresa May took a gamble few weeks ago calling for snap election hoping it will strengthen hands in the negotiation with the European Union in the disengagement of the Britain from bloc but rather than gain more seats in the Parliament as she anticipated, the Conservative stumbled giving Labour of Jeremy Corbyn the momentum.

The Conservative Party lost its majority in Parliament, throwing British politics into chaos with the emergence of a hung Parliament. Labour took 23 seats from the Conservative and 6 seats fro the other taking its tally to 261. The Conservative still remains the biggest party in Britain with 319, 7 short of the 326 needed to form a government.

Theresa May will ask the Queen for permission to form a minority Government when she visits Buckingham Palace at 12.30pm, Downing Street has said. The Prime Minister is refusing to quit despite her disastrous election night as the UK voted for a hung parliament. Mrs May is believed to have struck a deal, but not a formal coalition agreement, with the Democratic Unionist Party which will narrowly give her the numbers she needs to pass legislation in the House of Commons.

Mrs May is now scrambling to try and form a government and the DUP has signalled a willingness to do a deal even though the party’s leader Arlene Foster has expressed doubts that the Prime Minister can “survive”. Already, calls for Theresa May to resign is on the upsurge in the country even among her own Conservative but she rejected all calls for her resignation.

The deal with the DUP will surely change the context and strategy of the May’s negotiation with the EU as the DUP  wary of the impact of a hard Brexit on trade and travel with the Republic of Ireland, have sought a softer break than the one May has proposed.
