United States And Britain Warns Of Political Interference In Nigeria’s Presidential Election Result

0

Nigerians on Monday awaited the results of a hotly-contested and messy presidential election, as foreign powers expressed fears of political interference in the counting of the democratic vote.

Though election groups were mostly positive about the voting process despite technical problems, the U.S. and U.K. warned of efforts to manipulate the results of the race, the latest troubling sign in a country with a history of post-election violence.

“There are disturbing indications that the collation process — where the votes are finally counted — may be subject to deliberate political interference,” U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.K. Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said in a joint statement.
